Choosing baby bedding is a fun venture for any expectant parent. There are so many choices out there though, that it makes it hard to know which one is best for baby.

Organic baby bedding is easily the best option. Organic fabrics, such as cotton and bamboo, are produced without using pesticides or other harmful chemicals. These chemicals not only harm the environment, they can also potentially harm babies and others who use products made from them.

The youngest infants only need a few items of baby bedding: a fitted sheet and a light blanket for cool evenings. Both of these items are available in organic cotton, wool or silk and these fabrics are amazingly soft and will go a long way toward comforting baby.

While it is very tempting to give baby a soft pillow or a stuffed animal to snuggle against in the crib, do not succumb to the temptation. Newborn babies can easily smother against these items because they do not yet know how to roll away from them or to push them away.

In addition do not use a crib bumper pad for the same reason. Many experts believe that some cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) actually occurred as the baby became entangled in the bumper pad and could not free themselves.

Some new parents, already frightened at the cost of baby supplies, balk at the price of organically made baby clothes and bedding. However, when they consider that using organic products lessens the risk of allergies and other illnesses later in life, they could consider the money well spent. Buying organic bedding is a great investment in the future.

Baby yoga is a wonderful way to bond with your new baby. It helps baby’s muscles grow and stretch and is a fun activity they enjoy. Here are some easy ways to get started.

First of all, make sure baby is wearing clothes that allow them to move easily. The clothes should not bond anywhere.

The simplest yoga pose for baby is to simply hold him or her to an adult’s chest. The adult should breathe deeply and normally through the nose while keeping the mouth closed. This simple breathing can go a long way toward soothing a crying baby. It can also help calm parents frustrated at being unable to calm baby any other way.

Another fun pose is to lay baby on his or her back. Then slowly move their knees up to their chest. This is an excellent way to relieve colic. A variation of this pose is to move baby’s legs in a bicycle pattern.

You can also exercise baby’s arms moving them gently into the prayer pose or up above their head as high as they can reach. Baby will love it - not only will they like the movement; they can also watch Mommy or Daddy’s face.

As yoga becomes more main stream, there are many books and videos available to help introduce it to children, even babies. While it will be some times before baby can do a downward-facing dog or a tree pose, they will get a lot of benefit by starting baby yoga at a young age.

With Vanity Fair releasing “green” issues in May to celebrate green clothing fashion, the age of sustainable clothing is definitely here.  But a lot of people out there still don’t know exactly what constitutes sustainable clothing.

I’ve found most people think of green clothing as recycled materials, high performance wools, or fabrics made of lyocell and Tencel. But do any of these qualify as organic? Whats safe for your baby? And how does organic baby clothing fit in with sustainable baby clothes?

These questions are not actually that easy to answer as there is no American or even global standard for sustainable or organic clothing. Most people think the USDA certifies organic clothing however they only certify food and personal care products.  There is, however, the USDA certification for cotton plants and cotton fibers that are produced for cotton oils and seeds used in important food products.

Internationally,  there are only two organizations that provide structure for global organic farming, the International Federaion of Organic  Agriculteral Movements (IFOAM),and Codex Alimentarius. The Codexs Alimentarius Commission by the United Nations to help develop a global standard for food, to protect the health of consumers, and to ensure fair trade practices by food indsutries. IFOAM was created to promote and help support organic farming and agricultre by creating international standards and polices for organic produce.

The internatilnal market is still rulled by private companies with varying standards however they all have genrally the same intent and purpose.  Their eforts are to provide real protection to the environment, our workes in the field and on the product line, and the health of our consumers.
So when shopping for sustainable baby clothes or for yourself, look for “certified organic” labels.  Its always up tot he consumer, who has the strongest vocie in the market.
